Trichy

Tiruchirapalli, fondly called Trichy, is the fourth largest city of Tamil Nadu state. Its history dates back to 3rd century BC when it was under the reign of Chola dynasty. Several other dynasties including Pallavas, Pandyas and Vijaynagar, invaded and lent their contribution in its beautification which makes it one of the top attractions in the country. The most famous is Ranganathswamy Temple which is known for its vast size and incomparable architecture. What to see

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple

This temple is the landmark of the city and is counted amongst the world’s largest functioning Hindu temples covering 156 acres. It was built by Cholas dedicating to Lord Vishnu and represents a classic example of the Dravidian style of architecture. Interestingly, it is also one of the 108 Divya Desams (holy shrines of Lord Vishnu). Do visit the temple to see its imposing structure that steals attention with towering 21 gopurams.

Jambukeshwara Temple

It is a popular Shiva temple located in Srirangam island of Trichy district. The remarkable architecture of the temple is so powerful that it outshines even the famous Ranganathswamy temple. In accordance with history, it was built around 1,800 years ago by Cholas. You can notice the Chola inscriptions that exist to date. The interesting features are sthala-vriksham (holy tree) and the unique sanctum of the temple which features an underground water stream which never dries.

Erumbeeswarar temple

Every step in the city will introduce you to finer and mystifying temples built by Cholas. Erumbeeswarar sets apart with its differing location atop a hill. It distinguishes from other Dravidian architectural temples in many aspects. The central shrine is sanctified with the image of Erumbeeswarar (Shiva) in the form of lingam made of mud mound. It also has a beautiful garden where you can sit and admire the magnificent structure.

Rock Fort

The impressive Rock fort stands atop a 273 ft. high rock as an epitome of architectural brilliance. Built by Pallavas, it is a fortress featuring monolithic rocks that comprise of numerous rock-cut cave temples. It has seen evolution in the hands of Madurai Nayaks and Vijayanagara rulers. The temple complex has three shrines, of which the largest is Thayumanavar temple, dedicated to Parvati. 

Butterfly Park

A popular attraction in Trichy is this exciting Butterfly Park spread out in an area of 35 acres. It is situated on the bank of Cauvery River in Srirangam. You will fall in love with the huge varieties of butterflies that are stored in a huge glasshouse. The greenery and colorful nectar flowers add to its charm making it look like a dreamland. You will also find aesthetic sculptures of caterpillars and butterflies built at many places.
