Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal is an eternal beauty erected by the legendary Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. The masterpiece is the result of his passion for art and architecture that highly receives global attention. For its unparalleled architectural beauty, it is accorded as one of the ‘Seven Wonders of the World’. Shah Jahan commissioned it in 1631 under the lead architect Ustad Ahmed Lahauri to set the tomb of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Around 20,000 workers were used for its construction on a beautiful location on the bank of Yamuna River in Agra city.

The notable symbol of love was constructed by Shah Jahan posthumously in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. It is embodied with an unbeatable Mughal architecture and is considered as the best example of this type. The centerpiece is the tomb of Mumtaz Mahal accompanied by a mosque, a guest house and Mughal garden.

A plinth of stone is used as a base on which the mausoleum stands majestically surrounded by four minarets on the four corners. Extensive use of white marble lends the monument a soothing ivory-white color. At the entrance, a huge gateway is constructed which is adorned with intricately carved Arabic calligraphy of verses from the Quran. A few steps ahead lay Diana bench, an ideal spot where you can sit and take a picture with the monument. The gateway opens into a sprawling Mughal Garden wonderfully decorated with water channels, fountains and vibrant flowers. Spend some time in the blooming lush garden and enjoy the view of grand mausoleum. Then head to the adjoining main structure standing in all its glory featuring pishtaq, surmounted with a cupola and encircled by four tall minarets.

It is infused with an eye-catching work of art flaunting classic Mughal architectural features. Every inch of the monument is a sight to behold flaunting hypnotizing artwork. The floors are bedecked with finial floor tiling with perfectly blending colors.  As you look up, the ceiling reflects the quintessence of incised paintings that will have you gaze them forever. Walls are at par beautifully planted with pietra dura scrollwork and motifs mainly themed on a floral pattern. At some places, you can also see fine lattice screens, like a separating one over the tombs of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan. After the main mausoleum, visit the overlooking mosque in the complex. All these monumental structures are protected within a crenellated boundary wall made of red sandstone.

Whether it is its riveting beauty or mind-boggling history, Taj Mahal is worthy of admiration and must be in the bucket list of every traveler.
