Pondicherry

Pondicherry, the former French colony is a picturesque Union Territory of India. It is located on the coast of the Bay of Bengal in the Southern peninsula. The moment you arrive, you can feel the French influence intact in its culture and style of living. French styled buildings, white-themed houses, sea-facing promenade and lots of churches. It is a slow-paced town close to nature and probably the best place for a relaxing week.

What to see

  • Auroville

Fondly called 'The City of Dawn', it is an experimental township with a population of 2,000 people. The prominent landmark is Matrimandir, recognized by its enormous golden metallic sphere. The sphere is basically a peaceful area where people can relax and meditate. The town is best explored on foot, tour it and interact with the mix of native and foreign inhabitants.

  • Shri Aurobindo Ashram

It is an ashram founded in 1926 by renowned Indian philosopher-poet, Sri Aurobindo Ghosh. One of the top tourist attractions, it attracts spiritual seekers from all around the world. Make sure to visit ‘the Ashram main-building’ to see the Samadhis of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother Mirra Alfassa. 

  • Veerampattinam Beach

Veerampattinam is the biggest coastal village in Puducherry famous for Veerampattinam Beach. It is known for being one of the longest beaches in South India. Bask in the sun in its idyllic setting and relax taking in the picturesque views.

  • Promenade Beach

Also called 'Rock Beach' it is a picturesque stretch of sand along the Bay of Bengal. It runs from War Memorial till Dupleix Park on the Goubert Avenue. Take a leisurely stroll in its 1.2 km strip and soak in its captivating beauty. The spot is also ideal for a powerful yoga session.

  • Chunnambar

If you are fond of beach sports then consider visiting Chunnambar blessed with backwaters. Sail through the placid waters and admire the nature. Relax at Paradise Beach, located at the mouth of the backwater. Dive into the sea world with water sports and dolphin sighting.

  • Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

It is a 100-year-old church built in magnificent Gothic style architecture. It has rare stained glass panels depicting events from the life of Christ and saints of the Catholic Church. Other attractions include statues of four evangelists, glass pictures of saints and more.

What to eat

With a staunch French influence and contiguous Tamil Nadu, the food in Pondicherry is a fusion of French and Tamil. The menus of local eateries will have you salivating over Idlis, Dosa and Chettinad chicken curry. It is also a great place to try French baked delicacies.

What to shop

Some amazing collectibles from Pondicherry are papier-mache vases, handmade dolls, incense and scented candles, crocheted hats, ceramic tableware/ ornaments and bamboo knick-knacks. It is also famous for handicrafts of native plants; you can buy coconut shell bowls, palm stem paintings, palm leaf baskets or trays and trendy Kora grass bags.

How to reach

By Air- Pondicherry Airport is the major airport in Pondicherry that regulates domestic flights. The nearest airports with international connectivity are in Bengaluru and Chennai.

By Rail- There is no railhead in Pondicherry, however, the nearest railway station is Villupuram in Tamil Nadu. From there you can take a train to any part of the country.

By Road- It has a large network of roads and National Highways linking it to all major cities.
