Food of Kerala is simple yet delectable. Rice is the staple food of the state. Some popular breakfast items of the state are Puttu, dosas, idlis, sambhar and uttapam. Main course options include rice with dal and seasonable vegetables. Seafood of Kerala is extremely popular. Coconut is used in almost all local dishes of Kerala which gives them a distinct taste.

What to shop

Kerala is known for its Coir Products made using fibres extracted from the husk of coconut. Travellers can also buy Coconut Shell Handicrafts from here. You can see Elephant Figurines being sold in all local markets. Another exotic memento is “Nilavilakku” (lamp on the floor) which is believed to be auspicious. Spices of Kerala have earned great popularity and add a distinct flavour to every dish.

Cochin International Airport, Trivandrum International Airport and Kozhikode International Airport (CCJ) are three major international airports of the state. Indian Railways is another great option to visit Kerala as the state boasts over 200 railway stations. Roads of Kerala are extremely stunning, and road journeys can be enjoyed by taking state buses, cars and tourist taxis.
