Recognized for the tallest statue in the world, Statue of Unity, Gujarat is the epitome of architectural wonders. Some are newly unveiled while some date back to ancient Indus Valley Civilization. It's not just the ancient architecture that wows tourists, the myriad of dishes and extravaganza of festivities fascinate equally. Garba is the folk dance and the most devoured dish is Dhokla. Its thick jungles are ruled by Asiatic Lion and history traces its roots to notable Mahatma Gandhi and age-old temples. There is a lot to see in this wondrous land that keeps reimaging itself.

What to see

Rann of Kutch

'Rann' meaning salt marsh is a seasonally marshy saline clay desert in Kutch district. The seemingly white desert is known for astounding sunset-sunrise and full moon view. The sparkling crystals of salt look like ethereal celestial dust.   

Gir National Park, Junagarh

It is a protected area of the endangered Asiatic Lion, whose population is now left only in this region. The park offers a glimpse of burgeoning indigenous wildlife with a jeep safari. Other residents of the park are mugger crocodile, Indian leopard, Nilgai, Indian cobra and python.

Dwarkadhish Temple, Dwarka

Also called Jagat Mandir, the famous Krishna Temple is one of the four sites of Char Dham Hindu pilgrimage. It is a five-story structure supported by seventy-two pillars. The walls have beautiful carvings and shrine steals attention with commendable decoration.

Sabarmati Ashram, Ahmedabad

Located on the bank of Sabarmati River, it is one of the important residences of Mahatma Gandhi. It is now a museum with an extraordinary historical panorama of his life events on display. Also recognized as Gandhi Ashram, it houses Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya, Upasana Mandir, Vinoba Kutir and more.

  • Rani ki Vav, Patan

The 11th-century stepwell is a noteworthy UNESCO World Heritage site. It is a memorial to a King built by his wife. Showcasing the excellent architectural intelligence, the stepwell has naturally cooling feature. It is beautified with artistic carvings and sculptures of Lord Vishnu in various avatars.

  • Statue of Unity

The whopping 182 m tall statue of Sardar Vallabhai Patel is the tallest statue in the world. It can be found on Sadhu Bet (a river island) in Narmada district. The memorial site will keep you busy with a memorial garden, exhibition area, audio-visual gallery, a museum, etc.

What to eat

Gujarati cuisine tickles taste buds with salty, spicy and sweet flavors all at once. Some signature dishes are Khandvi, Dhokla, Thepla and Khakra. The best way to try authentic food is by having Gujarati thali, which offers an assortment of vegetables, pulses, roti, rice, yogurt and sweets.

Gujarat is the land of vibrant culture and hence offers some amazing souvenirs to take home. These are Tie-dye bandhani printed dress, Applique work apparels, Patola saree, Zari saree, articles of camel leather and decorative items of clay and terracotta.

By Air – The main airport is Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. It offers regular flights to all parts of the world.

By Rail – Vadodara Railway Station is the busiest railway station in Gujarat. Other important railway stations are Surat railway station, Ahmedabad Railway Station and Rajkot Railway Station.

By Road – The state is well-connected to the rest of the country by a good network of roads.
