The city is carved out of several historical events with the rule of various dynasties - Kachchhapaghatas, Tomars, Mughals, Marathas, Scindia and lastly Britishers. The city pretty much has a fascinating collection of regal structures like its iconic Gwalior Fort. Besides, the city has also gifted legendary singers to the country. The most famous being Tansen; his tomb is a popular attraction that exemplifies Mughal architecture.

Gwalior Fort

Gwalior Fort is the most prominent landmark of the city, majestically ensconced atop a hill. Rush to this impregnable 8th-century fort to witness its unsurpassed beauty. It is so big that you will need a complete day to explore it. Some striking features are Gujari Mahal, Man Mandir Palace, Zero Temple (where the second oldest record of zero was found) and 1500-year-old inscriptions. The hilltop location will make your jaws-drop with the sweeping view of Gwalior.

Teli ka Mandir

There is something hypnotizing about the ancient temples that are not only artful but also the way they convey their engrossing story. Teli ka Mandir is one such gem residing in the premise of Gwalior Fort. It is hard to get eyes off its remarkable amalgamation of North and South architectural styles. Earlier, it was used for processing oil due to which it is named 'Teli' meaning oil. The walls adorned with sculptures and numerous shrines of gods and goddesses make it a famous place of interest.

Jai Vilas Palace

The magnificent palace is a paradigm of royal and opulence from the golden era of Scindias. It was built in 1874 by the Maharaja of Gwalior and happens to be the residence of his descendants till date. The imposing structure is embodied with top-class European architecture with different floors displaying Tuscan, Italian-Doric and Corinthian architectural styles. Additionally, it also houses H.H. Maharaja Jiwaji Rao Scindia Museum, which exhibits personal belongings of the Scindia family.  

Sun Temple

Also called Surya Mandir, is one of the impeccable temples in the city dedicated to Sun. It was constructed by the notable Indian business tycoon, GD Birla in 1988. On the outside, it is entirely red in color due to red sandstone, but as you enter, the complete use of white marble inside gifs it a striking contrast. The intricate embellishments are worth spending time in this art-rich masterpiece. 

Tansen memorial

Apart from the mind-boggling history, Gwalior is also known for being the land of most notable singers. Tansen was one of them, the legendary singer and musician from the court of Akbar. Tansen memorial was constructed to commemorate him. It reflects beautiful Mughal architecture with a picturesque location with a lush garden.
