What to see

  • Shalimar Bagh

Mughals are known to have spent a long time in Srinagar, which was the golden period of development in the city. One of the wonders from that period is this gorgeous garden which is fondly called the 'Crown of Srinagar'.  Mughal Emperor Jahangir built it for his wife Nur Jahan, in 1619 as a symbol of their love. The word Shalimar in Sanskrit means 'abode of love'. It is spread in an area of 31 acres in three terraces. A walk in the garden will gladden you with 410 fountains, chinar vistas, unique chini khanas (arched niches) and Persian features like Diwan-e-Aam, Diwan-e-Khas and Zenana.

  • Nishat Bagh

It is an impossibly charming Mughal garden which also happens to be the largest of this kind in Kashmir Valley. Asif Khan, brother of Nur Jahan, established it on the bank of Dal Lake in 1633. You can’t help but find yourself smitten with the breathtaking views of the Zabarwan Mountains from the garden. The 12 terraces adorned with avenues of chinar and cypress trees, pools, water channels and fountains keep you engaged with their irresistible beauty.

  • Dal Lake

Dal Lake is the most prominent attraction of Srinagar that also serves as the symbol of the city. It is the second-largest lake in the state located at the foothills of Shankaracharya hills that encompass it on three sides. The most amazing experience of the lake is taken with the ride of Srinagar's traditional Shikara boat. Your gaze will run through the famous Mughal gardens that are located on its periphery. The views turn more exciting as you pass through the floating gardens called 'Rad', floating boat markets and more.

  • Chashme Shahi

Of all the Mughal Gardens in Srinagar, Chashme Shahi is the smallest garden in the city. It lies in a scenic location on the Zabarwan mountain range overlooking Dal Lake. The main highlight is the fresh water spring that is known to carry medicinal properties.  The resplendent verdure is spread in three terraces that please visitors with decorative fountains, an aqueduct and a small shrine of Chashme Sahi.

  • Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Botanical Garden

Visit the blissful botanical garden that not only satisfies eyes but also spreads information about the indigenous flora. It was built in 1969 and is named after the first prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru.
