Mysore

Officially called Mysuru, it is a lively city steeped in the royal brilliance of Wodeyar dynasty and Tipu Sultan. With a rich heritage and cultural legacy, it is celebrated as the 'City of Palaces' and 'Cultural capital of Karnataka'. The ruling dynasties left their imprints with seven stunning palaces that look just like a dream. Also, the city is accorded with enormous religious significance with ancient temples. These reflect the depth of Kannadigas culture, especially with Dasara festival, for which people visit from far afield.

What to see

Mysore Palace

Also called, Amba Vilas Palace is the first place to recommend in Mysore. Drenched in opulence and beauty, it used to be the official residence of the Wadiyar dynasty. The location at the centre of the city facing Chamunda Hills is at par. It will surely astonish you with the intoxicating mix of Hindu, Mughal, Rajput and Gothic style of architecture. 

Chamundi Hills

Located 13 km from the city centre, Chamundi Hills are famous for Chamundeshwari temple, named after Goddess Chamundi. A flight of 1,008 steps leads to its summit measuring nearly 1,000 m high. Along the way, you will spot a statue of Nandi Bull (vehicle of Lord Shiva). After reaching the main temple, the cynosure of eyes is a prodigious statue of Mahishasura holding a sword and a cobra. The sanctum sanctorum is sanctified with the idol of Chamundeshwari goddess. From certain spots you can enjoy the panoramic view of the city.

Jaganmohan Palace

It was constructed in 1861 as an alternate residence of Wodeyar royals when their Mysore Palace was turned into ashes after a fire accident. Today, it is a noted attraction in Mysore serving as an art gallery and a function hall. The 2000 plus exhibits are known to be one of the largest collections of artifacts in South India. Go through the classic paintings that present scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharata. Other includes weapons, sculptures, coins, brassware and more.

St. Philomena's Church

The most beautiful places to visit in Mysore include this magnificent historic church. It is a Catholic church that is the cathedral of the Diocese of Mysore. Admire the gigantic Neo-Gothic style architecture with twin spires that repulse to fit in the picture frame. You will learn why it is one of the tallest churches in Asia. People come here to worship and seek peace. The cathedral has a crypt that houses a statue of St. Philomena.

Railway Museum

Established in 1979 by Indian Railways, this museum themed on vintage locomotives is worth a visit. It is the second railway museum in India after the first in Delhi. Enjoy learning about railways with its collection of locomotives and a gallery of photographs and paintings. The exhibits also include railway signals and lights and a battery-operated mini-train for children.

By Air- You can take a flight to the city which is handled by Mysore Airport, a domestic airport. International travelers can avail flights from Kempagowda International Airport located in Bengaluru (168 km away).

By Rail- Mysore Railway station connects Mysore to all important cities like Bangaluru, Mangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, etc.

By Road- Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and other private bus agencies operate buses intercity as well as within the city.
