  • Kapaleeshwarar Temple

Kapaleeshwarar Temple is a richly decorated temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is an impeccable example of Dravidian architecture believed to have been constructed during the 7th century. The artistic grace can be seen with the presence of numerous shrines. The main deities are Shiva (worshipped as Kapaleeshwar) represented by lingam and his consort Parvati, depicted as Karpagambal.

  • Marina Beach

It is the most prominent landmark of the city situated on the shore of the Bay of Bengal. The strip of the beach starts from Fort St. George till Foreshore Estate measuring 6 km in length. Come here early in the morning to catch a spectacular sunrise view. In the evening, you will find lots of food stalls selling scrumptious street food like fried fish.

  • Elliot’s Beach

Those seeking peaceful time at a beach can make their way to Elliot’s Beach, which is contiguous with Marina beach. It is located in Besant Nagar due to which it is also referred to as Besant Nagar Beach. As you enter, the first thing that steals attention is the landmark memorial of a Dutch sailor, Karl Schmidt Memorial. It is ideal for enjoying calm walks and spending quality time with family.

  • San Thome Cathedral and Basilica

Built in the 16th-century, it is a Roman Catholic minor basilica built by Portuguese. Interestingly, the basilica is one of the only three known churches in the world built over the tomb of an apostle of Jesus. You are sure to fall in love with its Neo-Gothic styled architecture with interiors decorated gracefully. Also, visit its museum located just behind it.

  • Fort Saint George and Museum

The fort is an iconic landmark of Chennai constructed by the Britishers. It was named after the patron saint of England, St. George. The massive premises served as the residence of high ranking British officials and soon became the hub of merchant activity. You will find a museum inside that showcases relics of British-era. Other parts include Flag Staff, Wellesley House and St. Mary’s Church making it the best place in the city to take a glance at the modern Indian history.
