Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

This sanctuary is the main highlight that makes Periyar a popular tourist destination. It stretches in an area of 357 sq. km. surrounded by thick forests and crystalline lakes. In 1778, it was declared a Tiger reserve for its healthy population of tigers. On a tour, you are likely to sight Bengal tigers, elephants, Malabar grey hornbill, Nilgiri flycatcher and more.

Spice garden

Periyar also contributes to Kerala's well-known spice production. The innate environs will present you a chance to see the velvety fields of spices like cardamom, pepper, coffee, clove nutmeg and cinnamon. In addition to spices, locals also grow herbs like stevia, avocado and lemongrass.

Periyar River

Periyar River snakes through the eye-catching landscape of the village adding to its ethereal beauty. It is also known by the name of Vandiperiyar. It plays a major role in rendering water to several tea and coffee plantations. An array of tea factories on the river bank offer tea tasting opportunities of umpteen varieties to the visitors. 

Mangala Devi Temple

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary protects this ancient temple dedicated to Mangla Devi, a Tamil Goddess. Devout frequently visit the temple to take blessings. The tourists also make their way to this temple intrigued by its importance and history. It is beautifully decorated and thronged during the annual festival Chitrapournami when the Goddess is worshipped.

Pullumedu

It is a hidden gem in nature's trove of Periyar that enthralls travelers with its unsurpassed natural wealth. The sport lies on the route of Periyar River. You can opt for a river tour and catch glimpse of popular places like Sree Ayyappa Temple at Sabarimala and the Makara Jyothi. You can also reach here by a jeep and enjoy camping.
